Research Data Management Benefits

There are many reasons to make your research data available for re-use by other researchers:

To fulfill journal or funding agency requirements
To increase the visibility of your research
To raise your research profile
To allow others to validate your results

Research Data Repositories

You can search for data repositories in re3data.org.

Registry of Research Data Repositories (re3data.org)
re3data.org is a global registry of research data repositories that covers research data repositories from different academic disciplines. It presents repositories for the permanent storage and access of data sets to researchers, funding bodies, publishers and scholarly institutions.

Federated Research Data Repository (FRDR) This link opens in a new window
Search FRDR to find research datasets originating from researchers affiliated with Canadian institutions. Data deposited to other repositories across Canada can also be found by searching in FRDR. Any researcher affiliated with a Canadian institution can deposit data into FRDR.

Durham College Borealis
Borealis (Dataverse) is a free and secure data repository that supports the deposit and sharing of Durham College research data. Files are held on Canadian servers. As a researcher you can choose to make the content you upload available to the public, to specific individuals or collaborators, or to keep it locked.

Borealis is primarily a platform for publishing and sharing Datasets. It is not appropriate for the storage of highly sensitive or confidential data. Borealis does not accept deposits that could directly or indirectly identify a person or people, except where the release of such identifying information has no potential for constituting an unwarranted invasion of privacy and/or breach of confidentiality. Published Datasets are perennial; they can be deaccessioned or removed only in certain specific circumstances. As such, Borealis should be considered for preservation rather than short term storage of data.

The Library subscribes to a number of data products, including access to data from Statistics Canada. For assistance with these products, contact Kaelan Caspary, STEM and Data Librarian.

You can also find data that is freely available online. You can contact your subject librarian for assistance in locating data, or visit re3data.org to search for research data repositories.

Licensing Research Data

Licensing your data allows you to define how your data can be used. Note: You may only grant a license if you are the rights holder for the data. Links to two commonly used data licensing options, Creative Commons Licenses and Open Data Commons Licenses, are included below.
