Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

A research guide to help you get started with Scholarship of Teaching and Learning projects and searching the literature.

Search Strategies for SoTL

Use the Omni search for all type of library resources. Refine your search results by resources types (e.g., journal articles), subject, publication date, author, etc. You can also limit your search results to those available online or held by the library.

Another way is to search specialized databases in Education (listed below) and those in your areas of teaching.

Some Tips:

  • Use quotation marks around keywords to search as a phrase, e.g., "active learning"
  • Use "and" to combine different concepts,  e.g., "class size" and "student engagement"
  • Use "or" to combine "synonyms" to find more results, e.g., university or "higher education" or "post secondary education"

It's useful to identify a tool for organizing and managing the citations you discover during the literature review process. Zotero is a free citation manager that some faculty members like to use. The library also has workshops on using citation managers.
